Second Star to the Right Business Spotlight

New and gently loved children’s and young adult bookstore
Owners : Marc and Dea Lavoie
Founded : 2014

How did you get your start?

After teaching for more than a decade, we decided that we wanted to spread our love of reading and focus on getting books directly into the hands of children.

What about your business inspires you?

Everything about it! To watch the love of reading grow and blossom within a child is a truly unforgettable experience. Just hearing a child's laughter during story time or meeting a new mom inspires us to continue growing our business each and every day.

What’s the most exciting thing about being in the Tennyson / Berkeley neighborhood?

There is such a sense of community. The amount of involvement that people have with the local businesses. Every event we host, more and more people show up

Name a fun or little known fact about your business

We have two little store finches named after picture book characters, Pip and Posey. Stop by and visit them sometime!

What are some of your favorite places to go on Tennyson?

Cozy Cottage for brunch, Spruce, Pasty Republic, Allegro, Fat Sully, Downpours, the list goes on... We can do all our Christmas shopping just down the street!

When not at work, we can find you…

Binge watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix, playing with our dogs, or visiting our daughters who work at Local 46.

What excites you about the future of your business and the neighborhood?

Watching the children grow. It's so much fun! As well as being able to suggest the perfect book for each new age they grow into.

RE/MAX Business Spotlight

Denver-based real estate brokers
Managing Broker : Bill Rickman

How did you get your start?

We were originally RE/MAX City Horizons and came to Tennyson St in 1998. The company was started by Dan Jimenez and Jeff Laws who both continue to be active businessmen and property owners on Tennyson St. Originally located in the building they still own where The Daily Method and De Steeg Brewing are located, the company moved to our current location at 3870 Tennyson in 1999. City Horizons was acquired by RE/MAX Professionals in 2010 and is now part of a 7 office system in Denver Metro.

What about your business inspires you?

The Brokers in our office are inspired by the people they serve, the excitement of neighborhood, and the success of our organization.

What’s the most exciting thing about being in the Tennyson / Berkeley neighborhood?

The location and the vibe. As Managing Broker, I can’t imagine officing anywhere else. The energy, the business community and the opportunity here is tremendous.

Name a fun or little known fact about your business

We are involved in a lot of fun things, but here are a couple of interesting factoids… 1. Our office has the highest producing agents in the Remax Pros system, and some of the highest in the region. 2. At one time, Brokers in our office owned 13 buildings on Tennyson St. from 35th to 46th Avenues. Both these show our commitment to the neighborhood and to our profession.

What are some of your favorite places to go on Tennyson?

What I love, is the fact that within one block of our office, I have a choice of 14 restaurants and bars. We all have our favorites, but personally speaking, mine are Hops&Pie, Javiers, The Royal, Berkeley Untapped, Bookbar, and Mas Kaos.

When not at work, we can find you…

Our Brokers are an interesting and varied group. We are cyclists, art collectors, car enthusiasts, skiers, involved in charities and organizations, athletes, travelers, pilots, and sports fans!

What excites you about the future of your business and the neighborhood?

The opportunities to participate in community and a changing neighborhood really excites us. From housing, to new business, to neighborhood causes all continues to stimulate and challenge us. Remax Professionals and our Brokers will continue to be at the leading edge of all these and more.

Block & Larder

A modern take on a neighborhood bar & grill
Owners : Jason Forgy, along with his brothers Aaron & Lucas
Founded : 2014

How did you get your start?

Block & Larder is the second restaurant that my brothers (Aaron & Lucas Forgy) along with myself started. We’re fairly simple guys. We like good food and drinks and like to share them with other people. We had already started the beer focused restaurant at Freshcraft so when the opportunity to open a place on Tennyson Street came along we jumped on it. Focusing on steaks, pork chops, cocktails and whiskey came naturally.

What about your business inspires you?

Seeing a guest try something new and leave happy.

What’s the most exciting thing about being in the Tennyson / Berkeley neighborhood?

The support from the local neighborhood. Even in the past two years that we have been there have been substantial changes. The people here have reacted with positive excitement and the area just keeps getting better.

Name a fun or little known fact about your business

We will slice and package up our house made bacon to go if you ask us so that you can cook it at home.

What are some of your favorite places to go on Tennyson?

Ok, so this is going to be a long list and I may miss some – I do a pretty fair amount of shopping, eating and drinking on this street. Off of the top of my head: Hops & Pie, XO Gift Co, Jolly Goods, The West End Tap House, Downpours Coffee Shop, Fireant Studio, Jolly Goods, The Pasty Republic, Berkeley Untapped, Biju’s Little Curry Shop, Kat’s Eye Boutique, Lalu, Second Star From the Right, Call to Arms Brewing, Small Batch Liquors, Feral Mountain Co and Local 46. Also, while it’s not necessarily my favorite place to go Tennyson Pediatric Dentistry takes great care of my son.

When not at work, we can find you…

Practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, hiking with my wife and son or enjoying an adult beverage.

What excites you about the future of your business and the neighborhood?

The growth and evolution of the neighborhood. I’m excited for all the people that will get to experience Tennyson-Berkeley as the residential construction starts to wrap up in the upcoming months.

Kats-eye Boutique Business Spotlight

Unique casual clothing and accessories
Owner : Kat Haggerty
Founded : 2014

How did you get your start?

After closing a 20 year chapter of my nationwide clothing design and manufacturing business, I wanted to segue my experience to another level and introduce other clothing designer’s fashions to the neighborhood.

My birthing process began with Monica Martin and her consignment store on Tennyson Street called Boomerang. She taught me the intricacies of retail and customer service (2 things of which I had no prior experience because I was always “behind the curtain” in the fashion industry). Soon, it was time to take that leap of faith and start my own retail store and I opened the doors to Kats-eye Boutique in 2014. In as much, as I live and worked in the neighborhood and had developed relationships for years, it was logical to remain on Tennyson Street for my store.

What about your business inspires you?

The fashion industry continually introduces me to new styles, textures, patterns and colors. How are those expressed and translated into this season, as well as, into the next season. How can you coordinate last season’s goods with this season’s purchases and still be fashion-forward? I am inspired to show a client what works for her shape, coloring, her personality and her closet AND HAVE FUN AT IT! Fashion should be fun not stressful.

What’s the most exciting thing about being in the Tennyson / Berkeley neighborhood?

Being a Berkeley resident with my husband since 1973, we have seen A LOT!!! From a rough area, to now, one of the most desired neighborhoods! We are thrilled to have witnessed the phoenix rise again!

What are some of your favorite places to go on Tennyson?

The Royal Burger for the best hamburgers.
Parisi for a glass of wine after work.
The Pasty Republic for 2 scoops of ice cream.

When not at work, we can find you…

On the hunt to find more fabulous, unique clothing, gifts and accessories.

What excites you about the future of your business and the neighborhood?

Tennyson Street just acquired our fourth women’s clothing boutique in just the last six months! This neighborhood is becoming a destination and it is happening quickly! How exciting!!!

Local 46 Business Spotlight

Bar, performance & sports venue in Denver, CO
Owners : Grant and Niya Gingerich
Founded : 2012

How did you get your start?

We opened Local 46 Bar on 46th and Tennyson in 2012. Grant is also in real estate and has several rental (both commercial and residential) properties in West Highlands and around Denver. Niya also teaches Fitness Programs at QiFlow and CAC and is the President of the Tennyson Berkeley Business Association.

What’s the most exciting thing about being in the Tennyson / Berkeley neighborhood?

Many of our staff members are a part of this community and we pride ourselves on treating our staff very well. We want this to be a lifelong and respected career path for those who want it. We believe strongly in supporting a nurturing and positive work environment for our staff, who really are our extended family. We also do our very best to source as much as we can from local purveyors- we shop local and believe so much in supporting our local community that we added it to our name, Local 46!

Name a fun or little known fact about your business

We are huge supporters of our local, public schools and host several annual fundraisers at Local and Camino including EdFest (Edison), SandoFall (Sandoval) and many more! Local 46 donates 20% of sales on Sundays to Centennial Elementary during the school year and Niya sits on an Advisory Panel as well. Grant has been a huge advocate for Edison, Brown, Skinner and North over the years and el Camino has several programs that give back to these schools. We pride ourselves on giving back to the community however we can through our businesses and personally. You will often see us volunteering to pour drinks at these fundraisers or even driving the party bus they often donate to the auctions.

What are some of your favorite places to go on Tennyson?

We love so many restaurants and can barely keep up with all the new ones opening up but some local favorites that we eat at a lot are Brazen, Axios. El Chingon, Hops and Pie and Parisi (we eat out a lot).

When not at work, we can find you…

We love biking, traveling, volleyball, food and wine, walking around Sloans lake, hanging with friends and family. You can often find us playing Volleyball at Berkeley Park or Highland Park and we love hanging out on our property up in Tabernash. We love seeing shows up at Red Rocks of course and we have great local bands and DJ’s at Local most nights but feel a little out of the loop with the music scene, we have just been so busy!

What excites you about the future of your business and the neighborhood?

We love our community, we love the people in it, we love the small, locally owned shops and restaurants and that we can walk and bike to pretty much anywhere we need to go. There are great schools, wonderful PTA organizations, wonderful parks and trees and restaurants. We are very excited about the growth in our community and in Denver as a whole. Not everything is perfect or how we would have done it but we feel like our city is moving in the right direction. We are pumped that the train is finally running and our little city is really growing up and finding its identity. Berkeley is one of the best neighborhoods in Denver and we proud and honored to be a part of it. The density and in fill is welcomed and is necessary in order to support the small business community and help alleviate some of the parking issues. We need more folks within in walking and biking distance so we can be supported by the local community and don’t have to count on so many people that have to drive here. We just want the new build projects to be done with integrity, sustainability and quality.
